Axe ’Em, Jacks!
Deb ScottNACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Deb Scott, assistant professor of trombone at Stephen F. Austin State University, and Ron Petti, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ director of accompanying, will present a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, in Cole Concert Hall on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ campus.
Other performers on the diverse program of music will be Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ music faculty members Jennifer Dalmas, Scott Harris, Evgeni Raychev, and Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ senior Fahad Awan of Nacogdoches.
One of the highlights of the recital will be the world premiere of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Associate Professor Stephen Lias' "River Runner," a three-movement piece for trombone and piano that Lias wrote for Scott after they and their spouses shared a thee-day kayaking adventure through the Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park.
"I am thrilled to be able to bring this to an audience for the first time, said Scott. "Each of the three movements offers a different lense or angle of the event. It is a very exciting and beautiful piece that captures the essence of the trip."
Scott and Petti will also perform Henri Tomasi's "Concerto," and Harris will join the duo for Stephen Rush's "Inner Rebellion."
"The latter is the sequel to 'Rebellion,' which I performed in 2007," said Scott. "It has the same instrumentation and is also very energetic, rhythmic and loud."
An active performer and clinician in classical and jazz styles, Scott teaches trombone and bass trombone at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and is the director of the university's jazz band, The Swingin' Aces.
Currently, she is a member of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Faculty Brass Quintet and Longview Symphony.
She has also been a member of the Twentieth Century Unlimited Orchestra in Santa Fe, the New Mexico Music Festival in Taos, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the Greeley (Col.) Philharmonic and the Barnum and Bailey Greatest Show on Earth Circus Band.
Scott earned her doctorate in trombone performance from the University of North Texas, her master's from the University of Northern Colorado and two bachelor's degrees from Texas Tech University.
