ĢƵ Jazz Doctors, Swingin’ Aces to present concert

The ĢƵ Jazz Doctors will present a concert with the Swingin’ Aces jazz band at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in Cole Concert Hall. NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Jazz Doctors of Stephen F. Austin State University will join The Swingin’ Aces jazz band for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in Cole Concert Hall, Wright Music Building, on the ĢƵ campus.

The concert will open with The Swingin’ Aces, directed by Jake Walburn, performing some jazz standards from the Count Basie Library, such as “April in Paris” and “88 Basie Street.” The Aces will also perform an arrangement by ĢƵ senior Aaron Johnston of Conroe entitled “Orange Colored Sky” by Milton Delugg and Willie Stein and originally performed by Nat King Cole.

The Jazz Doctors will perform “Ymir’s Bones” by Ben Morris, assistant professor of composition at ĢƵ. This work was originally scored for big band but has been reworked into a small group setting. Other works will include “Freshly Painted Blues” by John Baboian along with some standard combo works.
