Welcome to the Department
of Military Science

ĢƵ provides leadership training in the form of basic military science courses that are open to all students.

Reserve Officer Training Corps gives cadets valuable academic, physical and leadership training and experience for future army and civilian careers. When cadets complete their ROTC courses, they receive a minor in military science and become commissioned officers in the U.S. Army.

 

1Lt Kile G. West 5K & 10K Memorial Race - Registration

This unique 5K/10K walk, jog, run is in beautiful East Texas and is open to the public. The Race is held in memory of First Lieutenant Kile G. West, an ĢƵ Alumni and ĢƵ Army ROTC commissionee who was KIA on Memorial Day, May 28, 2007, in Iraq.

  • For the first time in the program’s history, the ĢƵ ROTC Ranger Challenge Team won first place at the 2019 Task Force Tomahawk Ranger Challenge Competition held at Ft. Hood, which led them to the Apache Brigade Head to Head Ranger Challenge at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma where the team placed second. The three-day competitions test the strength of ROTC programs from around the state and regions. Cadres complete a variety of physical and mental tasks, including combat casualty care, orienteering and more.

    ĢƵ’s team earned a spot to compete in the Sandhurst Military Skills competition held in April at the United States Military Academy at West Point. There are 274 ROTC programs nationwide, and ĢƵ’s ROTC program is one of 16 teams chosen to compete at Sandhurst. The team will also compete against teams from other countries, including Brazil, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Obstacle Course

Lumberjack Battalion's newest edition is an obstacle course. Designed and created to provide real Army physical training to cadets, the obstacle course provides opportunity to increase strength, endurance and stamina while increasing cohesion and team-building.

Experimental Forest/Emergency Operational Center

Experimental Forest/Emergency Operational Center

The Experimental Forest provides a real-life, rugged forest training environment to test land navigation skills and tactical operations. The Nacogdoches Emergency Operational Center, which is supported by the Nacogdoches Sheriff’s Office, provides unique outdoor areas to train tactically on battle drills and tasks in a safe environment.

  • Cadets Waylon Jackson, Deran Tolbert and Josephine Unger completed the rigorous 12-mile foot march at Advanced Camp in Fort Knox, Kentucky.
  • The ĢƵ ROTC Austin Raiders are an elite group of cadets who know how to face tough challenges. In order to earn a place on the team, cadets must complete numerous activities on Zero Day.
  • Cadets Hayley Clark and Sarah Sparkman completed the requirements for Advanced Camp, a 31-day training event designed to assess a cadet’s ability and proficiency in basic officer leadership tasks. It is the most significant training and evaluation event in ROTC.
