Overview

This concentration is offered within the Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre program.

Pursue a professional career

You will gain the skills to work as a professional actor or director on stage, in film or for television. This concentration prepares you to enter the industry with confidence or continue your training in a graduate program.

Curriculum offers a multitude of hands-on experiences, including sessions with visiting professionals. You also will direct or perform in short plays and a fully produces one-act-play with multiple ticketed performances.

Your training opens doors to a wide range of professional opportunities:

  • Professional actor: Work on stage or transition to screen acting in film and television.
  • Director: Lead creative productions, from short plays to full-length works.
  • Acting coach: Help other performers refine their craft and artistic voice.
  • Choreographer: Develop movement and performance sequences for stage and screen.
  • Educator or administrator: Pursue graduate studies to work in academic, advisory or leadership roles.

Apply to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ's theatre program

The Denard Haden School of Theatre and Dance application is a two-part process. Your acceptance into the theatre program is contingent upon successful admission to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. These two application processes may be completed at the same time.

Required documents

Submit the following items to the Haden School of Theatre and Dance administrative office:

  • Current overall class rank, GPA, and SAT or ACT scores.
  • Résumé of theatre accomplishments.
  • Cover letter detailing your goals for your time at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and beyond.
  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your work.
  • A current photograph of yourself.

Visit Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ to audition or interview

After submitting your documents, you will schedule a visit with faculty members. Your showcase format depends on your intended focus. Refer to the list below to ensure you're ready.

Actors will audition

Prepare an audition showing your range and ability. Include two contrasting selections limited to a total of three minutes or less.

Designers, technicians and stage managers present a portfolio

Your portfolio presentation should showcase your abilities in aspects of design/technical theatre. An interview will follow the portfolio presentation.

Theatre future educators will interview

Be prepared to discuss academic accomplishments and areas of interest in research. You may present a performance audition or portfolio based on area of interest. Provide a sample of your academic writing in advance.

Musical theatre actors will audition, exam and maybe dance

  • Prepare two contrasting musical theatre song cut selections, limited to a total of three minutes or less.
    • one Musical Theatre Golden Age (1930-55) piece
    • one monologue (contemporary or classical) not to exceed one minute.
  • Take the music theory placement exam.
  • If you have a dance reel, we highly encourage you to submit this as supplemental material.

Undergraduate applications are accepted online. Apply using ApplyTexas or Common App. Both are fine, just only submit one.

Priority deadlines

For our bachelor's degree programs, we have rolling admissions. That means you can apply anytime. Although, applying early has benefits.
