Smith-Hutson Scholarship

Admissions & Aid

The Smith-Hutson Scholarship is intended for entering first-year and transfer students with established financial need and academic potential who are seeking an undergraduate degree from Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.

Taking into account other scholarships and grants that the student may receive and the student's and parents' financial resources, the Smith-Hutson Scholarship typically provides sufficient assistance to cover tuition, books, fees and reasonable living expenses on campus. First-year scholarship recipients are required to live together in the same on-campus housing unit unless commuting or living with family.

Requirements to apply

To apply for the Smith-Hutson Scholarship, you must:

  • be a legal Texas resident who is unmarried with no children
  • satisfy Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ's admission requirements
  • demonstrate financial need with a completed FAFSA
  • provide a current résumé
  • provide a personal essay describing career goals
  • provide two letters of recommendation
  • and be available for an in-person interview with the scholarship committee in late spring.

We encourage you to receive at least one letter of recommendation from an English or a mathematics teacher whose class you were enrolled during the past year.

How to apply

Complete Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ's general scholarship application. Once complete, you will be prompted to submit the outside scholarship application. This will give you access to apply for the Smith-Hutson Scholarship and submit all supporting documents.

Selection process

Smith-Hutson Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee that includes representatives named by the donor.

Maintaining eligibility

A recipient remains eligible to receive a Smith-Hutson Scholarship for a maximum of four years of undergraduate studies, if they maintain the following requirements:

  • minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ
  • and complete a minimum of 30 semester credit hours toward their degree.

If a recipient's GPA falls below 2.0 in any single semester, the scholarship is subject to termination.
