ĢƵ’s Cooking Matters program kicks off its seventh season


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Cooking Matters, a six-week community nutrition program hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences, kicks off its seventh year Monday, Sept. 19.

Cooking Matters will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. each Monday through Oct. 24 in the Human Sciences Building North. Through the Helping Other People Eat nonprofit food pantry, which provides supplemental food to those in need, program organizers have looked for participants from underserved areas in the Nacogdoches community.

ĢƵ ranked 11th best public university in Texas, nabs other high marks for 2023


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University received several good marks in the 2023 College Rankings issued by Niche, a market leader in data- and review-based research of schools and universities. ĢƵ was ranked the 11th best public university in Texas; the state’s fifth best college for agricultural sciences; and eighth in the state, as well as within the top 15% nationally, for kinesiology and physical therapy.

Niche also ranked ĢƵ’s Fraternity and Sorority Life as eighth best in Texas and the university’s history program as 12th best in the state. 

ĢƵ’s Office of Multicultural Affairs to host Noche de Gala


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Those attending Noche de Gala, an annual National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, will get to see traditional costarricense folklorico dancing, among other performances.

Scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 22 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Plaza, the event honors Latinx and Hispanic cultures through educational activities, performances, cultural cuisines and music.

Veronica Beavers named ĢƵ’s deputy chief diversity officer


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion have named Veronica Beavers, currently the university’s Office of Multicultural Affairs director, as the inaugural deputy chief diversity officer.

“It’s an honor to serve in this position,” Beavers said. “I will assist in consulting on matters pertaining to diversity, inclusion and equity across ĢƵ. I will also be able to implement plans and projects to uphold the university's commitment to making ĢƵ inclusive and equitable.”

Hicks to perform piano works by British composers in ĢƵ concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Pianist Tom Hicks will present a guest recital that features works by British composers when he performs at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in the Music Recital Hall, Wright Music Building, on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

ĢƵ horticulture professor featured in popular lifestyle magazine


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Jared Barnes, associate professor of horticulture in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, was interviewed by People magazine for a home and garden segment featured in the publication’s Sept. 12 issue.  

In the question-and-answer piece, Barnes provided gardeners with tips to help prolong chrysanthemum blooms through the fall season. 

ĢƵ School of Theatre and Dance to present witty, intriguing ‘The Moors’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A dark comedy about love, desperation and visibility opens the 2022-23 season for the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre and Dance when playwright Jen Silverman’s “The Moors” runs Sept. 29 through Oct. 2 in Kennedy Auditorium on the ĢƵ campus.

“The Moors” is about two sisters and a dog who live out their lives on the bleak English moors, dreaming of love and power. The arrival of a hapless governess and a moor-hen set all three on a strange and dangerous path.

ĢƵ Symphony Orchestra to perform works by Bernstein, Copland, Gershwin


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Symphony Orchestra at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform music by some of America’s greatest composers in the orchestra’s first concert of the fall semester at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

The ĢƵ Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Dr. Gregory Grabowski, director of orchestral activities at ĢƵ, will perform works by Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland and George Gershwin.

Agreement renewed for seamless transfer from LSCO to ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University Interim President Dr. Steve Westbrook and Lamar State College Orange President Dr. Tom Johnson met today on LSCO’s campus to reaffirm their 2019 Articulation Agreement that guarantees credits earned at LSCO will seamlessly transfer to ĢƵ for students wanting to complete a bachelor’s degree.

ĢƵ theatre students to present ‘The Yellow Boat’ one-act play


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present the student-directed one-act play “The Yellow Boat” by David Saar at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, in Regents Suite A in the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the ĢƵ campus.
