ĢƵ’s Stone Fort Museum honors 2017 Cum Concilio Club Heritage Preservation Award recipients


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Stone Fort Museum named Dr. Bobby H. Johnson and the late Birdie Wade as the 2017 Cum Concilio Club Heritage Preservation Award recipients.

“Dr. Johnson and Mrs. Wade are both well-deserving recipients of this award, as they both dedicated much time and effort to preserving the history of Nacogdoches and East Texas,” said Carolyn Spears, director of the Stone Fort Museum.

ĢƵ students partner with local Boys and Girls Clubs to construct bulletin boards


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Armed with colorful construction paper, scissors, glue and a creative vision, Stephen F. Austin State University students transformed bulletin boards into motivational messages at both Boys and Girls Clubs in Nacogdoches and Lufkin.

For the second year, Dr. Rachel Jumper, assistant professor in ĢƵ’s School of Human Sciences, partnered with community organizations to build an interactive service project for students in her family, school and community relations course. This year, the project expanded to include the Boys and Girls Club of Lufkin.

World-renowned Viento Sur trombone ensemble to perform at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Argentinian trombone quartet Viento Sur will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University in conjunction with Brass Day at ĢƵ.

“Viento Sur is a trombone quartet known worldwide for their beautiful ensemble playing and distinct sound when playing arrangements of authentic Argentine tangos,” said Dr. Deb Scott, professor of trombone in the ĢƵ School of Music. “ĢƵ is included on their current North American tour.”

ĢƵ’s Orchestra of the Pines to performs works of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Orchestra of the Pines at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Charismatic Capriccios and Dynamic Duos” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

The program includes two popular works, “Capriccio Italien” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and “Capriccio Espangol” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Both written by Russian composers, the works were inspired by their visits to surrounding European countries, according to Dr. Gene H. Moon, director of orchestras in the ĢƵ School of Music.

ĢƵ’s Rusche College of Business renovates boardroom, expands experiential learning


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University students in the Rusche College of Business have another avenue to engage in experiential learning.

In order to further its efforts in creating a corporate-like atmosphere, the Rusche College of Business renovated a boardroom in the McGee Business Building, Room 443, to provide students a meeting area typical of those used in the business industry.

ĢƵ’s ROTC competes in Ranger Challenge


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Two teams from Stephen F. Austin State University’s Army ROTC program had impressive showings during the annual Ranger Challenge competition held during October in Fort Hood.

The regional competition pitted members from 13 Army ROTC programs in events aimed at testing their endurance and skill levels in varied activities. Cadets showcased their talents in an Army physical fitness text, a communications lane, weapons disassembly and reassembly, 10-mile march and other activities.

ĢƵ voice students to present opera program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University voice students will present a program of musical theatre and opera scenes in a performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

The “Fall Scenes Program” will feature students enrolled in the Opera Workshop class taught by Dr. Deborah Dalton, associate professor of voice and director of opera, and Dr. Gene H. Moon, director of orchestras and musical director of opera.

ĢƵ kinesiology and health science students, faculty members attend Texas Society for Public Health Education annual conference


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University students and faculty members in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science participated in the Texas Society for Public Health Education annual conference in Waco.

During the two-day conference titled “Advancing Population Health through Diversity, Innovation and Collaboration,” students networked with professionals, attended panel presentations and workshop sessions, and viewed research posters.

‘Great Russian Nutcracker’ sells out; Annie Moses tickets selling quickly


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The two-night presentation of Moscow Ballet’s “Great Russian Nutcracker” at Stephen F. Austin State University is a complete sellout.

“We knew this event would be popular with East Texas audiences, so we are not surprised that both performances will have full houses, but we didn’t think they would be sold out a full week in advance,” said Scott Shattuck, associate dean of the College of Fine Arts and director of the University Series.

University strengthens academic offerings


Academic opportunities at ĢƵ continue to increase as a result of new face-to-face and online degree programs that have been developed in response to initiatives in the university’s strategic plan, “ĢƵ Envisioned.” The plan includes directives for the university to be innovative in the ways in which it engages students in experiences that prepare them for the challenges of living in a global community.
