NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Students in Dr. Karol Chandler-Ezell's cultural anthropology course at Stephen F. Austin State University recently received the Public Anthropology Award for Excellence in Writing on Public Issues with the Community Action Website, a site designed to help students explore ethical issues of anthropology.

Nacogdoches Railroad Depot to host fifth-annual Loblolly Railroad Model Train Display


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Loblolly Railroad Model Train Display returns for a fifth year to the historic Nacogdoches Railroad Depot.

Sponsors for this year's event are Stephen F. Austin State University, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Center for Regional Heritage Research, City of Nacogdoches, Amtrak, Operation Lifesaver and Union Pacific.

Saxophonist Nabb to perform collaborative recital


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Dr. Nathan Nabb, professor of saxophone at Stephen F. Austin State University, will perform a recital with guest pianist Chialing Hsieh when the artists present "Sonata" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Cole Concert Hall on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ campus.

Nabb selected two of his favorite pieces to be performed - the Sonata in A major (originally for violin) by César Franck and Sonata by William Albright.

Social media interns help promote Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ's Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - With their smartphones in hand, marketing majors Holli Harrison and Tori Thurman are busy at work promoting Stephen F. Austin State University's Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ on social media. A status update on Facebook, a tweet on Twitter and a post on Instagram help spread the news of upcoming events, accomplishments and fun facts within the college.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ's Residence Hall Association to ring in the holiday season with annual extravaganza


NACOGDOCHES, Texas -The Stephen F. Austin State University Residence Hall Association will ring in the holiday season at its annual Holiday Extravaganza from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ campus. This event is free and open to the public.

From 6-7 p.m. Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ's Pep Band and local music groups will perform on the front steps of the Austin Building. Jacob Lusk, RHA president, said the performances will be a treat, and the association always looks forward to the shows.

Guest piano recital at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ to feature Spanish music


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Dr. Kasandra Keeling will present a guest piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

Keeling, who is associate professor and coordinator of keyboard studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio, will perform a Spanish-themed concert that features the music of Domenico Scarlatti, Astor Piazzolla, Octavio Pinto and other noted composers.

'Cello Is the New Black' performance slated at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Cello Club with Evgeni Raychev in a recital at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in Cole Concert Hall on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ campus.

Performers will include active Cello Club members playing with Raychev, School of Music faculty member, and his students, who will present the program "Cello Is the New Black."

In its second season, the Cello Club will perform works by J.S. Bach, Frédéric Chopin, David Popper, Wilhelm Kaiser-Lindemann and other renowned composers.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ jazz bands to perform tribute program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces, the jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, in Cole Concert Hall on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ campus.

Directed by Dr. Gary Wurtz, professor of trumpet and jazz studies at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ, the Swingin' Axes will perform a program in tribute to the Boss Brass, the premiere Canadian big band.

In Perspective production to feature Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ dance program, Repertory Dance Company


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's dance program and Repertory Dance Company will showcase senior choreographic works and company pieces in the Danceworks production, In Perspective, which premieres 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, on campus in the dance studio in the Lucille Norton Health and Physical Education Complex, Room 201.

A second showing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, with the final show planned for 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. Tickets cost $5 for students, $8 for faculty and staff members and $10 for general admission.

Moon to perform with Orchestra of the Pines


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Orchestra of the Pines at Stephen F. Austin State University will welcome guest artists when the ensemble performs the program "Curtain Raisers" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in Cole Concert Hall on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ campus.

Conducted by Dr. Gene Moon, director of orchestras at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ, and guest conductors, the Orchestra of the Pines will present three well-known works, including Leonard Bernstein's Overture to "Candide," Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor and Pyotr Illych Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in E minor.
