Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Wind Ensemble to present 'Sounds of America'


Nathan Nabb, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ associate professor of saxophone, will perform John Mackey's "Concerto for Soprano Sax" with the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Wind Ensemble during the band's season-opening concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ jazz bands concert offers jazz, blues and Latin tunes


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces jazz bands in a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ campus.

Under the direction of Deb Scott, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ associate professor of trombone, the Swingin' Aces will open the concert with a varied program that includes jazz, blues and Latin tunes.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ orchestra to present 'By Popular Demand' concert


Violinist Kevin Lin, junior division winner of the 2011 Schmidbauer International Young Artist Competition, will be the featured soloist during the Orchestra of the Pines concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in Cole Concert Hall.

'Rabbit Hole' opens Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ theatre season


Missouri City junior Amelia Fultz, portrays Izzy in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ School of Theatre's production of "Rabbit Hole," rehearses a comic scene with White Oak senior Lindsay Love, who plays Izzy's mother. David Lindsay-Abaire's drama, which director Scott Shattuck calls "an astounding affirmation of the importance and resiliency of family," depicts an extended family learning to adjust after the accidental death of a child. It is being presented nightly at 7:30 p.m.

Ureña to lecture on Central American songs


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Dr. Juan Carlos Ureña, Stephen F. Austin State University assistant professor of modern languages, will give a lecture/demonstration on poetry and music in Central America at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in the Music Recital Hall on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ campus.

The presentation is part of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ School of Music's monthly Robert G. Sidnell Lecture Series in Music Education. The lecture's title, "Trovar: Memoria Poètica de la Conción Hispanoamericana," is the same as Ureña's book from which the lecture material is drawn.

Alternative Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Homecoming bonfire planned


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Due to the extreme drought in East Texas, this year's Stephen F. Austin State University Homecoming torchlight parade and bonfire will be modified to ensure safety without dampening the Lumberjack spirit surrounding the annual tradition.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ to screen 'Beautiful Losers'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As part of its monthly independent film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will present a free, one-night screening of "Beautiful Losers" at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

In this 90-minute documentary, directors Aaron Rose and Joshua Leonard follow the lives of 10 artists and designers, many of whom got their start in the early 1990s with little or no formal training.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - A faculty tuba recital on Tuesday, Oct. 4, and a guest euphonium recital on Thursday, Oct. 6, mark the beginning of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music's month-long Octubafest.
