ĢƵ Sylvans win fourth consecutive title at Louisiana Forest Festival


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Sylvans, Stephen F. Austin State University’s timbersports team, won its fourth consecutive collegiate title at the Louisiana Forest Festival’s timbersports competition held April 23 in Winnfield, Louisiana.

“We scored 26 points overall, narrowly beating out tough competition from Louisiana Tech University, the University of Arkansas at Monticello and Louisiana State University,” said Dr. Jeremy Stovall, Bone Hill Foundation Distinguished Professor of silviculture and Sylvans faculty advisor at ĢƵ. “Our team did a great job representing ĢƵ.”

Brahms’ Requiem featured in ĢƵ choral masterwork concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The combined choirs at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the spring choral masterwork concert, featuring Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem), at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at First Baptist Church, 411 North St. Admission is free.

ĢƵ’s Contemporary Ensemble to present live-streamed concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Contemporary Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present a live-streamed concert at 6 p.m. Friday, April 29, available for viewing on the ĢƵ School of Music YouTube channel.

The Contemporary Ensemble is directed by James Adams, director of the SRT program at ĢƵ. Zach Moore is assistant director.

Wurtz named dean of ĢƵ’s Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts


NACOGDOCHES. Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University has named Dr. Gary T. Wurtz dean of the Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts.

With a 30-year history at ĢƵ, Wurtz has served as interim dean of the ECFA since July 1, 2021 to the present. Joining the faculty at ĢƵ in 1992, he was professor of trumpet at ĢƵ from ’92 to 2016 and director of the Swingin’ Axes jazz band during most of that time. He served as director of the ĢƵ Summer Band Camps for 10 years.

Graduate-level ĢƵ social work students to present project proposal on local youth engagement


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Graduate-level students in Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Social Work will present research in correlation with the 21/7 Association’s Youth Engagement Project at 5 p.m. May 5 in the C.L. Simon Recreation Center’s meeting room.

Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 highlight of ĢƵ Symphony Orchestra concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The ĢƵ Symphony Orchestra’s final concert of the spring semester will feature Sergei Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 when the ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Conducted by Dr. Gregory Grabowski, director of orchestral activities at ĢƵ, the orchestra’s program will be “one of the most beautiful programs the ĢƵSO is going to perform this year,” Grabowski said.

ĢƵ’s Dr. Stephen Taaffe named 2022-23 Regents Scholar, becomes third consecutive College of Liberal and Applied Arts recipient


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Board of Regents recently named Dr. Stephen Taaffe, professor of history, the 2022-23 Regents Scholar during April’s regularly scheduled meeting. 

The title of Regents Scholar is the highest honor the university can bestow upon a faculty member. The honor is reserved for faculty members who are exemplary role models to the university community. The title is not an academic rank but an honorary title held for the duration of the recipient’s service to the university. 

ĢƵ Wind Symphony’s concert to feature works by Maslanka, Ives, Copley


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Wind Symphony at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the program “The Road to Now” when the student ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 25, in the Grand Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the ĢƵ campus.

Directed by Dr. Dan Haddad, associate director of bands, the Wind Symphony will perform “Illumination” by David Maslanka; Variations on “America” by Charles Ives; and “In Living Color” by Katahj Copley, among other wind band standards.

SRT student ensembles to perform at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Student ensembles in the Sound Recording Technology program at Stephen F. Austin State University will present concerts Sunday afternoon, April 24, in the Music Recital Hall of Wright Music Building on the ĢƵ campus.
