ĢƵ history, geography student youngest presenter at national conference


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Not only was Kaitlin Stewart, Stephen F. Austin State University history and geography freshman, the youngest presenter at the 2018 American Association of Geographers annual conference, but she also earned one of only two awards presented by the Supporting Women in Geography organization.

“I felt a little intimidated and under qualified. However, I was received warmly, and many people were impressed with how young I was,” Stewart said.

ĢƵ Phi Beta Lambda students make history at Texas State Leadership Conference


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Members of Stephen F. Austin State University’s professional business student organization Phi Beta Lambda made history and won nine awards at the recent Texas State Leadership Conference.

John Cohen, organization president and senior accounting major from Mesquite, was named Who’s Who for PBL and became the first ĢƵ student to receive this honor.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s ĢƵ Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. James Wilhite, owner of Wilhite Landscaping and Lawn Care Ltd., will present “Planting by the Moon: Rhyme or Reason.”

ĢƵ Gardens to host 17th year of Pineywoods Camp


The Stephen F. Austin State University Gardens’ Pineywoods Camp offers outdoor adventure, exploration and recreation in the scenic forests in and around Nacogdoches.  Three camps are available for ages 4-15.

Wonder Woods campers (ages 4-6) explore the woods using songs, games, art projects, hiking and hands-on discovery at the ĢƵ Pineywoods Native Plant Center from 8:30-11 a.m., June 11-15.  Cost is $85.

ĢƵ’s Hospitality Shindig delights guests, educates students


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — While guests with fancy hats, pastel dresses, bow ties and suits mingle by the pool, Stephen F. Austin State University hospitality administration students work behind the scenes to make the Kentucky Derby come to life at The Fredonia Hotel.

From the moment guests arrive, event-planning students dressed to the nines greet and escort them to the reception area where catering students serve hors d’oeuvres.

ĢƵ Center for Regional Heritage Research exhibit now open


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Center for Regional Heritage Research’s “More Than a Riveter” exhibit opened Thursday, April 26, at the Nacogdoches Railroad Depot.
 
Sophia Savage, a counseling graduate student assistant for the CRHR, and Kierstin Smith, a ĢƵ of Nursing student, created the exhibit, which aims to preserve the history of the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps stationed in Nacogdoches during World War II.
 

ĢƵ political science professor analyzes presidential speechwriting in new book


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The origins and sincerity of presidential speeches are the focus of a new book written by a Stephen F. Austin State University professor.

Ken Collier, ĢƵ professor of political science, analyzes U.S. presidential speechwriting in his new book, “Speechwriting in the Institutionalized Presidency: Whose Line Is It?”

ĢƵ announces recipients of 2018 research grants


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University's Office of Research and Graduate Studies has announced the recipients of its annual Research and Creative Activity and Research Pilot Study grants.

ORGS and Academic Affairs conduct a university-wide call for proposals, and the deadline for submissions is typically the end of October. The University Research Council conducts a blind peer review of all applications. Grant awardees are notified early in the spring semester and funded through the remainder of the fiscal year.

New options for academic studies available to ĢƵ students


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Changes in curriculum recently approved by the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents reflect society’s continuing reliance on data and technology.
 
A new Bachelor of Science in data analytics approved Tuesday is a partnership between the computer science, economics, and mathematics and statistics departments.
 

Sampson named dean of research and graduate studies; board approves faculty, staff appointments


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Pauline Sampson was approved as dean of research and graduate studies by the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents Tuesday.
 
As professor of secondary education and educational leadership and a member of the graduate faculty in the James I. Perkins College of Education, Sampson has served on 83 dissertation committees and chaired 46 dissertations. She has served as chair of ĢƵ's Institutional Review Board since 2011 and has worked with many ĢƵ stakeholders across campus.
