Annual 12x12 event raises funds for ĢƵ art scholarships, grants


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Work is well underway to make this year’s 12x12 scholarship fundraiser for the Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University another success.

The silent auction features 12-by-12-inch pieces of art created by approximately 70 artists from Nacogdoches, Lufkin and other areas of East Texas. Anyone may silently bid on the unique one-of-a-kind pieces, according to Crystal Hicks, event committee chairwoman.

ĢƵ’s interior design program receives reaccreditation


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University Bachelor of Science in interior design program has been awarded the Council for Interior Design Accreditation.

With this accreditation, which attests to program quality, interior design students can be confident the program meets the rigor of peer review and will help them develop skills and knowledge required to practice interior design, according to the CIDA accreditation letter. CIDA representatives visited the university in September 2017 to conduct a program review and assessment.

ĢƵ names new athletic director


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Ryan Ivey has been appointed director of athletics at Stephen F. Austin State University by President Baker Pattillo. Currently serving as athletic director at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, Ivey will join the ĢƵ athletics department on July 1.
 

Former ĢƵ music educators, alumnus inducted into state jazz hall of fame


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Among music industry professionals and educators in Texas and throughout the U.S., the name of Darrell Holt is synonymous with jazz excellence.

The late Holt, former associate professor of music at Stephen F. Austin State University, is among the inductees in the inaugural class of the Texas Jazz Educators Association’s Hall of Fame. The announcement was made at last month’s Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio where some of Holt’s former colleagues from ĢƵ, former students and admirers from across the nation heard the news.

ĢƵ chemistry and biochemistry students help professor file patent


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University students enrolled in a patent application course gained first-hand experience with international patent applications by assisting with a patent for an ĢƵ faculty member’s invention that could slow or stop progress of certain cancers.

Dr. Matibur Zamadar, assistant professor in ĢƵ’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is the owner and developer of novel chemotherapeutic compositions and methods that could benefit cancer patients, and he allowed students to shadow and assist in the patent application process.

ĢƵ art scholarships announced for 2018-19 academic year


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Christopher Talbot, director of the School of Art at Stephen F. Austin State University, announced the recipients of ĢƵ and Friends of the Visual Arts scholarships for the 2018-19 academic year at the recent opening of the 35th Annual Art Alliance Spring Show. More than $35,000 in scholarships was awarded.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Art Alliance student organization at Stephen F. Austin State University recently held its 35th Annual Spring Art Show in the School of Art galleries. Forty-one art students entered 87 works.

ĢƵ theatre students, Friends of the Visual Arts participate in Blueberry Festival


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Activities in and around The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House on June 9 will add to the traditional food, fun and festivities of the annual Texas Blueberry Festival.

Students from the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre dressed as popular characters from fairy tales and children’s stories will again greet those attending this year’s downtown event as they promote the upcoming ĢƵ SummerStage Festival.

ĢƵ employee receives commendation from U.S. Army


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A Stephen F. Austin State University employee was honored recently with a Public Service Commendation Medal from the U.S. Army.

Sonnie Mosier, an administrative assistant in ĢƵ’s Department of Military Science, received the medal, which is one of the highest public service decorations the Army gives to civilians. According to the Army’s website, the award recognizes “service or achievements that contribute significantly to the accomplishment of the mission of an Army activity, command or staff agency.”

ĢƵ to screen ‘Valley Uprising’ film


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Valley Uprising” at 7 p.m. Friday, June 1, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.
