Forestry students complete conservation projects in Montgomery County


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Members of Stephen F. Austin State University’s student chapter of the Society of American Foresters recently collaborated with a number of partners including Rotary International, the Texas A&M Forest Service and Trees For Houston to promote conservation and urban tree health in Montgomery County.

“I applaud the students for helping make the conservation movement stronger in Montgomery County,” said John Warner, urban district forester for the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Tickets still available for Barefoot Movement bluegrass concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Tickets are still available for the upcoming concert of The Barefoot Movement when the exciting, young bluegrass band performs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The performance is the last in this year’s University Series presented by the ĢƵ College of Fine Arts.

FVA to award scholarship in honor of esteemed art professor Arscott


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University will award a newly established $1,000 scholarship this spring in honor of longtime art and filmmaking professor William E. Arscott.

Arscott, who recently turned 83, is ĢƵ’s longest-tenured faculty member with more than 54 years teaching at the university. This scholarship is one of many the FVA has established to honor retiring art instructors. However, Arscott has no plans to retire soon.

ĢƵ’s A Cappella Choir to premiere ‘Where Everything is Music’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The A Cappella Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Where Everything is Music” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

The program theme will examine the many ways in which music permeates and affects our everyday life, according to Dr. Michael Murphy, associate professor and director of choral activities in the ĢƵ School of Music.

ĢƵ’s choral ensembles celebrate works of Bernstein


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Choral Union and Women’s Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the program “The Best of All Possible Worlds: A Bernstein Celebration” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

The concert’s music celebrates the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, who is “arguably the greatest, and most diverse, musical mind in our country’s history,” according to Dr. Tod Fish, associate director of choral activities for the ĢƵ School of Music.

ĢƵ Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature Soil, Plant and Water Analysis Laboratory director Dr. Franta Majs


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s ĢƵ Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. Dr. Franta Majs, director of ĢƵ’s Soil, Plant and Water Analysis Laboratory, will present “For Better Fruits, Vegetables and Landscapes, Test Your Soil.”

ĢƵ psychology graduate student receives Marilyn M. Odom Graduate Student Award


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University psychology graduate student Stacey Kerr recently received the 2017 Marilyn M. Odom Graduate Student Award from ĢƵ’s Alumni Association.

A native of Spring Creek, Nevada, Kerr said she is honored to receive this award. “There are a lot of talented and bright graduate students at ĢƵ, and I am in awe to have been both nominated and chosen for such an award. I am grateful to the professors and my colleagues and family for their support in my desire to pursue higher education.”

Lumberjacks make great T-shirts


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Scientists and science students from universities across the nation will soon be wearing T-shirts designed by Lumberjacks.

Stephen F. Austin State University students won the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s national T-shirt design contest. T-shirts with the design will be sold at the society’s 2018 annual Experimental Biology meeting in San Diego in April.
