North Forney High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble to perform at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The North Forney High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble will present a performance of the show “End of Days” at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

A 5A school, North Forney High School opened in 2009 with only freshman and sophomore students. Jim Gist, the school’s percussion director, began the program, which has experienced much growth and earned the reputation as a premier percussion program in the North Texas area.

ĢƵ to present student-directed ‘Antigone in New York’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present the full-length play “Antigone in New York” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, in the Downstage Theatre on the ĢƵ campus.

“Antigone in New York” is written by Janusz Glowacki. Play translation is by Glowacki and Joan Torres.

International Women’s Day teach-in scheduled for March 8


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — In celebration of International Women’s Day, Dr. Heather Olson Beal, associate professor in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Secondary Education and Educational Leadership, is hosting the second teach-in from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 8 in the Wyatt Room of the Steen Library on the university campus.

ĢƵ faculty and staff as well as community members will offer 30-minute sessions on topics such as body image, professional profiling, bias, intersectional feminism and more.

ĢƵ Bass Fishing Club wins national championship


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — For the first time since 2006, the Stephen F. Austin State University Bass Fishing Club has won the Abu Garcia College Fishing National Championship.

The competition was held Feb. 26 through 28 on the Harris Chain of Lakes, part of the Ocklawaha River basin in Central Florida. This is the third national championship victory in the club’s history.

ĢƵ Observatory to host public viewing session


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University Observatory will host its next public viewing session 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, weather permitting, giving visitors the opportunity to see the night sky like they have never seen it before.

Opening its doors to the public periodically throughout the year, the observatory is home to over 15 telescopes, including one formerly used by NASA.

ĢƵ’s Office of Multicultural Affairs to host second annual Women’s Empowerment Summit


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will host its second annual Women’s Empowerment Summit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

The summit will focus on empowering women from various backgrounds and include sessions where speakers will discuss empowerment in areas such as professional development, education, etiquette, health, body image and more.

ĢƵ’s School of Human Sciences launches online bachelor’s degree program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences has launched a new degree program that allows students to earn a four-year degree completely online.

The program, which became available to ĢƵ students in fall 2017, offers an entirely online Bachelor of Science in human sciences with an emphasis in human development and family studies. All core and elective courses are available online.

Association for Business Communication-Southwestern U.S. names ĢƵ lecturer Outstanding Business Educator


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Association for Business Communication-Southwestern U.S. has posthumously awarded Judi Biss, former Stephen F. Austin State University lecturer in the Rusche College of Business, the 2018 Outstanding Business Educator Award.

Biss began teaching at ĢƵ in 1999 and continued serving for almost 20 years. She taught various business communication courses and was an advocate for undergraduate and graduate research.

ĢƵ School of Theatre to present ‘(Biedermann and) The Firebugs’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – There’s a line in the show: “ … the best camouflage of all, in my opinion, is the plain and simple truth. Because nobody ever believes it.”

Dr. Richard Jones had long forgotten that line in Max Frisch’s play “(Biedermann and) The Firebugs,” but he remembered this theme from when he first read the play more than 30 years ago.
