Friday Film Series: ‘Quincy’ chronicles life of iconic record, film producer


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Quincy” at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Cole Art Center announces holiday hours


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, Stephen F. Austin State University’s historic downtown gallery, will be open during regular gallery hours for a portion of the holiday season through Jan. 4.

Regular hours are from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Cole Art Center will be closed Monday through Wednesday, Dec. 23 through 25 and Dec. 30 through Jan. 1.

Yoakum senior Coleman awarded Jones Art Scholarship at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Lucille Coleman has been selected as this year’s Charles D. Jones Art Scholarship recipient at Stephen F. Austin State University. A post-baccalaureate student from Yoakum, Coleman’s major concentration is in drawing and her minor concentration is in printmaking in ĢƵ’s School of Art.

ĢƵ art student Silcox awarded Frields Scholarship


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University have selected Allison Silcox, a senior student in sculpture from Winnie, as this year’s recipient of the Gary Q. Frields Art Scholarship.

To be eligible for the Frields award, students must “demonstrate an exemplary work ethic, show versatility in the use of media and techniques in two or more areas, and show innovation and quality in their work,” according to the criteria established by Frields.

Lufkin filmmaking student Shepherd awarded Arscott Scholarship at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES. Texas – Typhanie Shepherd, a Stephen F. Austin State University junior from Lufkin, has been selected as this year’s William Arscott Art Scholarship recipient. Shepherd is a studying filmmaking in ĢƵ’s School of Art cinematography program. The Friends of the Visual Arts at ĢƵ presents the award annually.

New Lumberjack Express and Jo's Diner partnership benefits community members in need and ĢƵ human sciences students


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - A new partnership between Stephen F. Austin State University's Lumberjack Express mobile food lab and Jo's Diner at the Helping Other People Eat Food Pantry will give students in ĢƵ's hospitality administration and food, nutrition and dietetics programs more opportunities to prepare for their future careers and serve the community. It also will add kitchen space and manpower to HOPE Food Pantry to help serve more Jo's Diner guests.

Giant inflatable purple crayon created by ĢƵ art students teaches kids about color and scale


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Students at Stephen F. Austin State University’s Early Childhood Laboratory arrived on the chilly morning of Dec. 11 to see ĢƵ art students inflating a 50-foot-long purple crayon sculpture on the front lawn of their school.

This semester-ending project for Professor Lauren Selden’s 3D Design class in the School of Art taught ĢƵ students the elements and principles of design when working with 3D forms. It also helped both the college students at ĢƵ and the pre-K students in the Early Childhood Laboratory relieve stress at the end of a busy semester.

ĢƵ human sciences students raise awareness about the local poverty rate and its effect on children


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The number of Nacogdoches children living in poverty continues to rise, and students in the Stephen F. Austin State University chapter of the Phi Upsilon Omicron national honor society for family and consumer sciences are working to help the community understand the depth of this problem.

At 30.9%, the poverty rate in Nacogdoches far exceeds that of Garrison (20.6%), Lufkin (21.3%) and Longview (18.3%). It is twice the state’s poverty rate of 14.9%, according to U.S. Census Bureau data based on 2013-17 American Community Survey five-year estimates.

Dove Award-winning, Grammy-nominated Isaacs family to perform at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Start the new year off on the right note with the multi-Dove Award-winning and two-time Grammy-nominated family of gospel singers, The Isaacs, when they perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

Thanksgiving Homebound recognized at national conference as model student-run service project


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A Stephen F. Austin State University student service project that helps feed approximately 150 local families during Thanksgiving was recognized as a model for other universities across the country Nov. 21 at the National Council on Family Relations annual meeting in Fort Worth.

Thanksgiving Homebound has assisted Nacogdoches families in need for nearly 10 years. Coordinated by ĢƵ’s Jacks Council on Family Relations, the service project stands out because of its longevity, community and campus involvement, and impact on ĢƵ students’ education.
