New assistant dean of ĢƵ Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion brings more than a decade of educational experience


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — As a kindergartener at an elementary school in southeast Houston, Dr. Michara Delaney-Fields fell in love with the world of education and aspired to hold an important position within it one day.

Her dream has since come true several times over, most recently when she was selected to serve as Stephen F. Austin State University’s new assistant dean of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

ĢƵ’s Mariachi Los Leñadores to present ‘Una Noche De Serenatas’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Mariachi Los Leñadores, a student-run organization and ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present “Una Noche De Serenatas” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the Music Recital Hall in Wright Music Building on the ĢƵ campus.

“One of the traditions in the Mexican culture is to serenade a loved one with a mariachi,” said Dr. J.D. Salas, associate professor of tuba in the ĢƵ School of Music. “This recital will serve as a serenade to the ĢƵ and Nacogdoches communities following the group’s fall semester of rehearsals and performances.”

ĢƵ Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature professor emeritus and director


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s ĢƵ Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Dr. David Creech, professor emeritus and ĢƵ Gardens director, will present “Reconnaissance in the Pursuit of Knowledge is Seldom Wasted: New Plants for a 21st-Century East Texas.”

ĢƵ planetarium announces show schedule


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The planetarium in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Cole STEM Building will offer two shows on Saturdays starting Dec. 7.

The planetarium has public shows every Saturday with group shows available throughout the week upon reservation.

“The Secrets of Gravity – In the Footsteps of Albert Einstein” will be presented at 3 p.m., and tickets are $3. Geared toward children but open to all ages, the show takes viewers on a journey through space and time to learn about gravity.

Outstanding faculty members to be honored at 31st ĢƵ Gala


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Chosen for their excellence in teaching and innovation in research, two Stephen F. Austin State University faculty members will be honored Saturday, Dec. 14, during the 31st annual ĢƵ Gala.

ĢƵ to present annual Holiday Celebration


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present its annual ĢƵ Holiday Celebration at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the ĢƵ campus.

A highlight of the program will be a performance of “Christmas Cantata,” or “Sinfonia Sacra,” by Daniel Pinkham. The concert will also feature works by Dominick Argento, Felix Mendelssohn, George Frideric Handel, Eric Edward Whitacre and Giuseppe Verdi, along with seasonal favorites.

Preservice teachers build connections, develop co-teaching experience outside the classroom with Wild About Science


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Around 100 Stephen F. Austin State University preservice teachers helped 900 local fourth graders investigate ecosystems, soil particles and tree functions at the second-annual Wild About Science learning excursion Nov. 5 through 7 at ĢƵ’s Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

The preservice teachers, who are earning degrees through both online completer and face-to-face, campus-based ĢƵ education programs, worked together to show fourth graders how to connect the science they’ve learned in the classroom to real-life situations at the native plant center.

Dr. David Creech receives lifetime achievement award from Native Plant Society of Texas


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. David Creech, Stephen F. Austin State University professor emeritus of agriculture and director of ĢƵ Gardens, received the Charles Leonard Weddle Award for lifetime achievement in the field of Texas native plants from the Native Plant Society of Texas during its 2019 banquet in League City.

‘The Music of Silence’ featured in ĢƵ’s Friday Night Film Series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “The Music of Silence” at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

ĢƵ’s Stone Fort Museum announces 2019 Cum Concilio Club Heritage Preservation Award recipients


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Stone Fort Museum has named the late Dr. James E. Corbin and Dr. Tom Middlebrook as the 2019 Cum Concilio Club Heritage Preservation Award recipients.
