Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ bands to present joint concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band in a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

Under the direction of Brett A. Richardson, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ assistant director of bands, the Symphonic Band will open the concert with Percy Grainger's "Spoon River " and "Old Churches" by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Michael Colgrass.

Award-winning bluegrass family, Cherryholmes, to perform at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ


Cherryholmes, the International Bluegrass Music Association's 2005 Entertainer of the Year and regular performers on the "Grand Ole Opry," will present a Christmas concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in W.M. Turner Auditorium as part of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ College of Fine Arts' University Series.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Elaborate works of art by creative young artists were plentiful Friday as Stephen F. Austin State University hosted Art Day, a preview program that allows high school students to experience college-level art courses.

Cherryholmes, known as American's first family of Bluegrass, will present "Cherryholmes Bluegrass Christmas" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in W.M. Turner Auditorium as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts' University Series. The group was named the International Bluegrass Music Association's 2005 Entertainer of the Year, has received two Grammy nominations and performs regularly on the Grand Ole Opry.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ jazz bands to present joint concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University jazz bands, the Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces, will present a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, in Cole Concert Hall on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ campus.

Under the direction of Deb Scott, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ assistant professor of trombone, the Swingin' Aces will open the concert with a varied program of works, including "Inside Out" by Matt Harris and "Basie's Buddy" by John LaBarbera.

"We will also play tunes the audience will recognize because of artists who have recorded them," Scott said.

"The Old One," a 12.5" by 36" oil on masonite completed by Michael Frary in 1954, is included in "Texas Modernists: Selections from the Collection of Carl R. McQueary," which will open at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ's The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House Friday, Nov. 21.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Wind Ensemble to present concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Wind Ensemble in its final concert of the semester at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

The featured work on the program will be "Sinfonia in B-flat" by Amilcare Ponchielli, an Italian composer best known for his orchestral favorite "Dance of the Hours," explained Fred J. Allen, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ director of bands and the Wind Ensemble's director.
