ĢƵ reports enrollment numbers for fall 2017


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — While Stephen F. Austin State University is reporting a fall enrollment of 12,614 students, a 1-percent decrease from fall 2016, there are bright spots to be found in the enrollment numbers.

The highest first-time undergraduate retention rate for fall 2017 is 71.6 percent, representing a 4.3-percent increase during the past five years.

ĢƵ’ ‘Tartuffe’ to feature colorful, elaborate costumes


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Creating costumes for a period play like Molière’s “Tartuffe” takes time, skill and a great deal of preparation. The best designers do extensive research before creating sketches or starting construction.

This past summer, Stephen F. Austin State University Professor of Theatre Angela Bacarisse happened to be in Europe with touring theatre students at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland. She took the opportunity to visit France, as well, to do museum and gallery research for the School of Theatre’s upcoming presentation of “Tartuffe.”

Uber makes its Nacogdoches debut Wednesday on the ĢƵ campus


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Uber, a national ride-hailing service common in larger cities, debuted in Nacogdoches Wednesday on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

State representatives and ĢƵ officials shared their excitement about the economic boost and personal services the company will provide Nacogdoches residents and ĢƵ students.

ĢƵ’s Swingin’ Axes, Aces to perform music of Basie, Herman, Sinatra


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present the Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands performing at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

The program will showcase a mix of classic and swing jazz favorites, according to Dr. Deb Scott, director of the Swingin’ Axes.

ĢƵ to present student-directed ‘Thank You For Protesting’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present Paul Adam Levy’s one-act play “Thank You For Protesting” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Oct. 14, in the Downstage Theatre on the ĢƵ campus.

Directed by Mesquite senior theatre major Taylor Solice, “Thank You For Protesting” is a satire about a citizen’s right to protest.

Red Mountain Trio to perform at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Red Mountain Trio will perform at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in the Music Recital Hall in the Wright Music Building on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Renowned soloist Hitz to perform tuba recital at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – As another guest artist recital celebrating the 2017 Octubafest at Stephen F. Austin State University, internationally renowned soloist Andrew Hitz will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

Octubafest is a performance series held by many universities around the world to showcase the tuba and euphonium as solo and chamber music instruments, according to Dr. J.D. Salas, associate professor of tuba and euphonium studies at ĢƵ.

ĢƵ music faculty joins harpist Mitchell in program of works by Debussy, Caplet


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Award-winning harpist Emily Mitchell, artist in residence in the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music, will perform with music faculty colleagues at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, in Cole concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

In addition to Mitchell, the program titled “Mask of the Red Death” will feature Christina Guenther, flute; Melissa Nabb, viola; Jennifer Dalmas, violin; Alba Madrid Walburn, violin; and Evgeni Raychev, cello. Composers represented on the concert are Claude Debussy and André Caplet.

Registration underway for Junior Jacks Virtual Experience


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Registration is ongoing for the Junior Jacks Virtual Experience at Stephen F. Austin State University. The popular two-week School of Theatre camp is designed for children entering third through ninth grades. This year’s online camp is scheduled for Monday through Friday, July 27 through Aug. 7.

Dr. Jeremy Stovall awarded Faculty Senate chair plaque in recognition of excellence


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Dr. Jeremy Stovall, professor of forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University, was recently presented with a plaque recognizing his dedication to excellence as Faculty Senate chair by ĢƵ President Dr. Scott Gordon.

“I want to congratulate Jeremy Stovall for leading our Faculty Senate during this past year,” Gordon said. “We will all remember 2019-2020 as the academic year that saw a worldwide health crisis as a result of COVID-19. Jeremy was a shining star and handled this critical leadership role with careful thought and compassion.”
