Barrio Writers workshop culminates in live reading Friday


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Young local writers attending this summer’s Nacogdoches/Stephen F. Austin State University Barrio Writers workshop are getting advice on their writing from nationally known artists and preparing for a live reading at 6:30 p.m. Friday online.

ĢƵ’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture to establish silvopasture demonstration area


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Thanks to a Conservation Innovation Grant from the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture is moving forward with the establishment of a silvopasture demonstration area at the Walter C. Todd Agricultural Research Center.

“Silvopasture is an agroforestry practice that combines the production of trees with an understory component of forage for livestock,” said Jason Grogan, research associate with the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture.

Madrid taking ĢƵ Music Prep program in new direction


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A new director of the Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music is taking the music outreach program in a new and exciting direction.

Alba Madrid, an adjunct faculty member in the ĢƵ School of Music, began training recently as the new director and took over as head of the program on June 1.

“I am excited to embark on a new journey in my professional career as the director of an institution that has the potential to grow and become an integral part of the community,” Madrid said.

ĢƵ Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature Moore Farms Botanical Gardens’ education and events manager


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s ĢƵ Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. Rebecca Turk, education and events manager for Moore Farms Botanical Gardens in Lake City, South Carolina, will present “Moore Farms Botanical Garden: A Germinating Success from Concept and Collections to Programs.”

ĢƵ hosts 14 exchange students


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of International Programs is hosting 14 exchange students from six different locations this semester.

“This has been one of the most diverse groups of foreign exchange students the university has hosted,” Heather Catton, ĢƵ director of international programs, said.

The group comprises two students from Pakistan, two from Tunisia, five from France, three from the United Kingdom, one from Taiwan and one from Malta. Eleven of the students are undergraduates while three are graduate students.

Cellist Ruževic to perform at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Renowned cellist Nikola Nino Ruževic will present a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Ruževic, who is associate professor of cello and chamber music and the coordinator of chamber music studies at the University of North Texas, will perform with his wife, pianist Lara Ruževic.

ĢƵ colts place at world championship


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University equine program successfully exhibited two weanling colts from the university’s breeding program at the 2017 American Paint Horse Association World Championship Show held in Fort Worth.

Make Me Move, a solid paint-bred colt, was named Reserve Breeder’s Trust Futurity Champion and placed sixth in the solid paint-bred Weanling Stallions Class, while Remember the Name, also a solid paint-bred colt, placed fifth in the same class.

ĢƵ students intern with NFL and Women’s NBA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Being on the sidelines never looked so good.

During the summer, three graduate students in Stephen F. Austin State University’s athletic training program interned as athletic trainers with the NFL and Women’s NBA.

Cody Oliver, Lufkin native, spent seven weeks working with the Houston Texans, and Chris Elliott of Nashville, Tennessee, served the Tennessee Titans. Sara Caitlin Godwin from Auburn, Alabama, interned with the New York Liberty Women’s NBA team.
