Dr. David Creech to be ĢƵ Gardens December lecture series speaker


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s ĢƵ Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

Dr. David Creech, director of ĢƵ Gardens, will present “Is the Pineywoods Native Plant Center a Case Study of Divine Intervention … or Maybe Not? Capitalizing on the Best Plants, Plans and People to Create a Green Resource for the Gulf South.”

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Incoming first-year college students who want to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing will now find the admission process easier at Stephen F. Austin State University with the Lumberjack Nursing Guarantee.

ĢƵ first-generation students awarded $5K scholarships from Coca-Cola


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Six first-generation students at Stephen F. Austin State University received $5,000 scholarships from Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages to help with their financial needs so they can continue their studies at the university.

ĢƵ’s Cooking Matters program holds eighth season in new location


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Human Sciences’ six-week community nutrition program, Cooking Matters, completed its eighth year at a Nacogdoches food pantry’s new resource center earlier this month.

Partnering with the East Texas Food Bank and Nacogdoches HOPE Food Pantry, students in ĢƵ’s community nutrition course provided nutrition education and basic cooking lessons to participants in the community from Oct. 2 through Nov. 6.

New ĢƵ centennial merchandise features tartan


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — In honor of Stephen F. Austin State University’s centennial year, the merchandising program in the James I. Perkins College of Education School of Human Sciences is offering centennial-branded ĢƵ tartan pocket squares and scarves for purchase.

Featuring the official ĢƵ tartan along with the ĢƵ centennial logo, the items are available exclusively online through ĢƵ’s merchandising program website.

ĢƵ’s concert bands to perform a variety of themed works


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Three concert bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will present a variety of works when the students perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in Turner Auditorium, Griffith Fine Arts Building, on the ĢƵ campus.

The Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Tamey Anglley, director of bands at ĢƵ; the Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Dan Haddad, associate director of bands; and the Symphonic Band, directed by Dr. Chris Kaatz, assistant director of bands, will each perform works reflecting different themes.

ĢƵ Music Prep, NISD collaborate in educational outreach initiative


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Symphony Orchestra at Stephen F. Austin State University recently presented a concert for approximately 450 Nacogdoches ISD second grade students in an educational outreach initiative and collaborative partnership between the school district and ĢƵ School of Music and its Music Preparatory Division.

“The primary goal of the concert was to introduce young children to classical music and provide them with an exhilarating live performance experience in the newly renovated Turner Auditorium at ĢƵ,” said Alba Madrid, director of Music Prep.

ĢƵ alumni reflect on benefits of online degree programs during National Distance Learning Week


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — You don’t have to be on campus to take advantage of a high-quality, affordable education at Stephen F. Austin State University. You also don’t have to be available to attend classes between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

“Most of our online students are nontraditional,” said Megan Weatherly, executive director of the Lumberjack Learning Commons at ĢƵ. “From caregivers to full-time workers to students who are constantly on the move, online programs provide them the flexibility and access to reach their educational goals.”

Van Kley, Cunningham collaborate on piney woods plant manual


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — For years, the lack of a comprehensive local flora manual for East Texas has been an impediment for Dr. James Van Kley’s ongoing research as a professor of biology at Stephen F. Austin State University. The problem is nearing its end as Part 1 of the book “Herbaceous Plants of the Pineywoods of East Texas and Louisiana” was published in October with text written by Van Kley and illustrations created by Bruce Lyndon Cunningham, a Nacogdoches-based illustrator.

ĢƵ voice students to perform selected scenes from famous operas


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Voice students in the School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Opera Scenes of Fantasy and Frivolity” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.
