Compound patented by ĢƵ's National Center for Pharmaceutical Crops shows promise in treating cancer
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A plant many consider destructive may have just redeemed itself by offering promise in fighting cancer.
A team of researchers at Stephen F. Austin State University's National Center for Pharmaceutical Crops, located within the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agricultural, has spent years researching giant salvinia, a noxious plant species known to overtake waterways and kill aquatic life.
Cole Art Center announces holiday hours
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, Stephen F. Austin State University’s downtown Nacogdoches art gallery, has announced its holiday hours.
With the exception of Mondays, The Cole Art Center will be open each day throughout the rest of December. Hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Exhibitions currently showing include “Collective Transference: Houston Area Clay” and “The Patriotic Art of World War I in France,” both of which are showing through Dec. 31.
Prominent donors and faculty members honored at 29th ĢƵ Gala
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University honored prominent donors and other individuals whose work has positively impacted the university during the 29th annual ĢƵ Gala held recently in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.
Donors honored this year include Susan and Sam Calomino, Madeline and Alfred Danheim, and ExxonMobil.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Economics Reading Group, led by Dr. Ryan Phelps, associate professor in the Rusche College of Business, recently hosted a video contest about J.D. Vance’s book “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.”
Registration underway for spring Music Prep lessons, classes
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Registration is underway for private lessons and group classes offered for the 2018 spring semester by the Music Preparatory Division of the School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University.
Besides the usual 16-week private lessons in piano, harp, violin, voice, bass, classical guitar, saxophone and cello, Music Prep is introducing early childhood music classes in the coming spring, according to Pat Barnett, director of the Music Preparatory Division.

Stone Fort Museum announces holiday hours
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Stone Fort Museum will close Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, through Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, for university holidays and exhibit installations.
Exhibitions for 2018 will include Y’Barbo’s Stone House and the Stone Fort Museum featuring artifacts John Durst and his family used while living in the stone house from 1829 to 1834.
An exhibit on ‘everyday carry’ will examine the objects of past and present that people deem important enough to carry in their pockets, purses and packs at all times.
ĢƵ art, music, theatre professors find innovative ways teach fine arts online
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Each day for the past few weeks, Dr. Christina Guenther, professor of flute at Stephen F. Austin State University, accompanied by her husband, Dr. Ron Petti, director of collaborative piano at ĢƵ, have recorded a video of themselves performing works that Guenther’s students are working on. The videos are posted to her flute studio’s Facebook page for students’ enjoyment and to help them learn the music.
“I hope it keeps everyone feeling like we’re still getting to be together … at least a little,” she said.
