ĢƵ Gardens to host pollinator Saturday Seminar


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s ĢƵ Gardens will host a Saturday Seminar on wildscaping for pollinators from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 22 at the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

“Pollinators are responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat, but their populations are threatened with serious decline,” said Dawn Stover, ĢƵ Gardens research associate and pollinator plant specialist. “Anyone can help native pollinators by planting their own backyard pollinator habitat.”

Tickets available for Reduced Shakespeare Company’s performance


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Tickets are still available to a performance of the Reduced Shakespeare Company in “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

‘Endless Dusk: An Icelandic Exhibition’ highlights ĢƵ students’ artwork


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University art students who participated in a Maymester study abroad program in Iceland will present the course work they created in an exhibition to show Sept. 10 through 21 in the lower art building on the ĢƵ campus.

“Endless Dusk: An Icelandic Experience” will open with a reception at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in the student galleries.

ĢƵ Gardens’ kiwifruit crop yields impressive harvest


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Researchers at ĢƵ Gardens are reaping the sweet rewards of their ongoing investigation into the feasibility of adding kiwifruit to the state’s long list of agricultural commodities.

Since the initial crop produced in 2014 – the state’s first-ever successful kiwifruit harvest – the expanding plot of golden kiwifruit, located on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus, has produced more than 1,500 pounds of the small, tender-fleshed fruit.

ĢƵ’s Office of Multicultural Affairs launches new diversity series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — “Something To Chew On” is Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs’ newest series, which is designed to stimulate open dialogue about current issues among the campus community.

The series’ first installment is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Baker Pattillo Student Center Plaza, with the second event planned for Oct. 17. The series is free and open to ĢƵ students, faculty, staff and the community.

ĢƵ’s Veterans Resource Center sponsoring social event


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Military veterans, ROTC members and their guests are invited to attend a social for community veterans, sponsored by Stephen F. Austin State University’s Veterans Resource Center, from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Maklemore’s Ale House and Bistro, located at 2304 North St.

Joe Cuellar, a veteran of the U.S. Army and singer/songwriter from Lufkin, will perform a medley of songs, some his original music, from genres ranging from folk to country. There is no cover charge, and free appetizers (until they are gone) will be provided.

ĢƵ Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature Louisiana vegetable extension specialist


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s ĢƵ Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Dr. Kathryn “Kiki” Fontenot, Louisiana State University’s AgCenter vegetable extension specialist, will present, “You Say Tomato, I Say Tomahto; Let’s Cut the Whole Thing Off.”

ĢƵ’s engineering physics program receives accreditation


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS — Stephen F. Austin State University’s bachelor’s degree program in engineering physics has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.  

ĢƵ launches food and nutrition degree


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University has launched a degree program catered toward students passionate about nutrition.

The new bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition serves as a specialized plan for students pursuing a career in nutrition-related fields.

Unlike the dietetics and nutritional sciences degree offered at ĢƵ, this new degree focuses less on clinical nutrition and more on community nutrition.

Lumberjack Band Alumni Association halftime performance slated for Sept. 8


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Seventy members of the newly re-established Lumberjack Band Alumni Association, including generations of Lumberjack Marching Band musicians and twirlers, are scheduled to perform during halftime of the ĢƵ versus Tarleton State University football game, and with registration still open, more are expected to join in the festivities.

After initially forming in the 1970s before disbanding about a decade ago, this new group organized last year.
