ĢƵ vocal student finalist in Houston scholarship competition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University student Taryn Surratt, a senior high lyric mezzo-soprano from Houston, has been selected as one of 10 finalists in the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston’s Inaugural Vocal Scholarship Competition.

Surratt will perform "Se Romeo" from “I capuleti e i montecchi” by Vincenzo Bellini, "Must the Winter Come So Soon" from “Vanessa” by Samuel Barber, and Yum-yum's aria from “The Mikado” by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. The competition is from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Houston.

ĢƵ School of Theatre to present Shakespeare’s ‘Titus Andronicus’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –  When the School of Theatre faculty at Stephen F. Austin State University chose William Shakespeare’s male character-dominated play “Titus Andronicus” for this year’s Mainstage Series, it was in response to the all-female show, “The Wolves,” that had filled the first Mainstage run for the fall semester.

Men’s Choir, Women’s Choir to perform songs about Earth, wind, fire


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Men’s Choir and Women’s Choir at Stephen  F. Austin State University will present the program “Elemental: Songs about Earth, Wind and Fire” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

The program theme lends itself to a wealth of outstanding texts and music based on the subjects of Earth, wind and fire, according to Dr. Tod Fish, associate director of choral activities in the School of Music and the choirs’ director. ĢƵ collaborative pianists Hyun Ji Oh and Dr. Thomas Nixon will accompany.

ĢƵ Wildlife Society student chapter ties for fifth at national quiz bowl


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University student chapter of The Wildlife Society placed in a three-way tie for fifth during The Wildlife Society’s national quiz bowl held at the joint conference of the American Fisheries Society and The Wildlife Society in Reno, Nevada.  

Clarinetist Kowalsky to collaborate with ĢƵ music faculty on concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Clarinetist Frank Kowalsky, professor emeritus at Florida State University, will perform a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Kowalsky will collaborate with several ĢƵ music faculty members, all of whom are graduates of Florida State University, according to Dr. Christopher Ayer, professor of clarinet in the ĢƵ School of Music.

Spectrum Ensemble to present ‘A New Light’ percussion concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Spectrum Ensemble will bring a program of original percussion duo works to Nacogdoches when founders Jaime Esposito and Stephen Hall perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the Wright Music Building’s Band Hall, Room 121, on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

ĢƵ STEM Research and Learning Center hosts Second-Grade STEM Day


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Students participating in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Second-Grade STEM Day learned about elasticity and electricity during a physics magic show led by Ali Piran, lecturer and lab coordinator in the Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy.
 
Partnering with the James I. Perkins College of Education, STEM Day gave ĢƵ elementary education students the opportunity to teach STEM lessons to students from Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary and Fredonia Elementary.
 

ĢƵ Sylvans win fifth consecutive Lumberjack Competition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s timbersports team, the Sylvans, won a fifth consecutive collegiate title during the annual Arkansas State Lumberjack Competition held during Timberfest in Sheridan, Arkansas.

ĢƵ students placed first in the double buck crosscut, single buck crosscut, Jack and Jill crosscut, men’s bowsaw, underhand chop and axe throw.

“It matched last year as one of the Sylvans’ most dominant victories in Timberfest competitions,” said Dr. Jeremy Stovall, professor of forestry and Sylvans faculty advisor.

ĢƵ planetarium announces show schedule


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The planetarium in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Cole STEM Building will offer two shows on Saturdays starting Oct. 12.

The planetarium has public shows every Saturday with group shows available throughout the week upon reservation.

ĢƵ to host Pre-Seminary Day


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Division of Multidisciplinary Programs will host a Pre-Seminary Day Oct. 25 on the ĢƵ campus for individuals interested in religious studies or seeking connection with Texas seminaries.
