ĢƵ’s Office of Multicultural Affairs adds National Coming Out Day to fall slate of events


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — In constant search of new ways to highlight campus diversity, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs has added a new event to its fall semester slate that will celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

In honor of National Coming Out Day, which takes place Friday, Oct. 11, the OMA will host a “celebration to promote LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusion and raise awareness about the community to ĢƵ and Nacogdoches residents,” according to Tegan Mingo, OMA student ambassador.

ĢƵ Lale Lecture to host civil rights activist Joan C. Browning


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s East Texas Historical Association will host civil rights activist Joan C. Browning during the Georgiana and Max S. Lale Lecture at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.

Browning is one of 436 people who were part of the Freedom Riders, a group of civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated southern United States in 1961 and subsequent years to challenge the non-enforcement of Supreme Court decisions that ruled segregated public buses were unconstitutional.

‘Lion’ featured in ĢƵ’s Friday Night Film Series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Lion” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Behind-the-scenes work makes ‘The Wolves’ on-stage soccer look effortless


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – When the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre presents Sarah DeLappe’s coming-of-age play “The Wolves” Oct. 1 through 5, two theatre majors will not only perform their countless duties as assistant stage managers, Dallas sophomore Michael Nunez and Colleyville freshman Aubrie Smith will also put their skills as soccer players to work.

Guest flutist Sundberg to perform at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Terri Sundberg, professor of flute at the University of North Texas College of Music and a member of the Crested Butte Opera Orchestra and Crested Butte Festival Symphony Orchestra, will perform a guest recital at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

ĢƵ School of Human Sciences students lead Cooking Matters program for fifth year


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A partnership between Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences and the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler aims to curb high levels of food insecurity in East Texas through a six-week Cooking Matters program.
 

ĢƵ’s Office of Multicultural Affairs to host Brave Space Series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will host its first Brave Space Series of the fall semester beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room. The series' discussion is titled “Stereotypes within Education Systems.”
 
"This Brave Space session will discuss the stereotypes within the education system relating to race, social class and dialect,” Vanessa Huynh, OMA student ambassador, said. “We also will talk about ways to overcome stereotypes within education systems.”
 

ĢƵ Wind Ensemble to perform works by internationally acclaimed composer Syler


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –  The Wind Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “An Evening with James Syler” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the ĢƵ campus.

Dr. David Campo, director of bands at ĢƵ, conducts the Wind Ensemble. Syler serves as the School of Music’s composer in residence for the fall semester, working with student musicians as they perform his works. Included on this concert are three diverse pieces from the composer’s catalog, including “Gearbox,” “Congo Square” and “Love Among the Ruins.”

ĢƵ Percussion Ensemble concert to feature student soloists


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Percussion Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present its first fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

Directed by Dr. Brad Meyer, director of percussion studies at ĢƵ, the ensemble will perform works by Van Halen, Robert Oetomo, Caleb Pickering, James Campbell and Russell Wharton.

ĢƵ College of Sciences and Mathematics to host event connecting students to STEM professionals


Students interested in learning from and connecting with STEM professionals will have the opportunity at STEM Connect, an event hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Cole STEM Building, Room 401.
 
Representatives from Microsoft, Elliott Electric Supply, BPX Energy, Kalkomey Enterprises, NacSpace and CGI will discuss what they do and how students can prepare for their future careers.
