ĢƵ’s School of Social Work to celebrate 40 years


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Social Work invites the public to attend its 40th celebration Sept. 27 in the School of Social Work Building located on the university’s campus.

The celebration commemorates 40 years of the Bachelor of Social Work program’s accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education. The school will hold an open house with guest speakers, student success stories, and food and refreshments.

ĢƵ to present student-directed ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Playwright Brian Friel’s “Dancing at Lughnasa” will open the fall semester of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre’s student-directed plays.

Directed by Longview senior Bethany Trauger, the full-length play will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in the Downstage Theatre on the ĢƵ campus.

Walter C. Todd Agricultural Research Center celebrates 50 years


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Although this year marks the 50th anniversary of Stephen F. Austin State University’s Walter C. Todd Agricultural Research Center, the legacy of agricultural research at ĢƵ extends back to the very origin of the university’s founding in 1923.

Walking through the modern ĢƵ campus, the last thing one might expect to hear is the lowing of cattle and clucking of chickens, but in 1932 these pastoral vocalizations were simply the melodies that defined the northeast section of campus.

ĢƵ to observe annual Octubafest featuring tuba, euphonium performances


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dr. J.D. Salas, associate professor of tuba and euphonium studies in the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music, will open ĢƵ’s 2019 Octubafest Celebration with a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the university campus.

ĢƵ music faculty to present Pi Kappa Lambda scholarship concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Faculty members of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will be the featured performers during the annual Pi Kappa Lambda Music Faculty Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

The concert showcases the talents of the diverse School of Music performing faculty, according to Dr. Jamie Weaver, associate professor of music history at ĢƵ and president of Pi Kappa Lambda honors society. Proceeds from the concert fund scholarships for deserving ĢƵ music majors selected by the honors society.

ĢƵ professor publishes new book of poetry


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Dr. Christine Butterworth-McDermott, professor in the Department of English and Creative Writing, has published a new book of poetry titled “Evelyn As” with Fomnite Press.

The poems detail the early life of chorus girl Evelyn Nesbit, who had a traumatic and abusive relationship as a teen with famous architect Stanford White. This relationship led her husband, Pittsburgh millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw, to murder White. The murder resulted in the first “trial of the century.”

ĢƵ’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture hosting community-wide tree contest


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture will host its fourth annual NacogdoTREES competition, a free community-wide contest celebrating the natural beauty of Nacogdoches, from Sept.16 through Nov. 18.

ĢƵ’s Fifth Annual International Film Festival to begin in October


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Languages, Cultures and Communication in collaboration with the Division of Multidisciplinary Programs will bring five foreign cinematic productions to the ĢƵ campus during the Fifth Annual International Film Festival.

The features will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 7, 8 and 9, and Oct. 14 and 16, in Liberal Arts North, Room 142 on ĢƵ’s campus. Admission is free. The festival will show one film each night with English subtitles. ĢƵ faculty members will lead pre- and post-discussions of the films.

ĢƵ’s Guenther, Petti to perform ‘An Air of Mystery’ program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present faculty members Dr. Christina Guenther, flute, and Dr. Ron Petti, piano, performing the program “An Air of Mystery” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

The recital is part of the Friends of Music Concert Series and will feature works by Aaron Jay Kernis, David Maslanka, Jake Heggie and Samuel Zyman.

DeLappe play ‘The Wolves’ provides excellent roles for women


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Audiences who watch Sarah DeLappe’s “The Wolves” come to life on W.M. Turner Auditorium stage on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus in October will likely be reminded of some of the challenges they encountered trying to navigate the adolescent angst of high school years.
