Fifth Barrio Writers program at ĢƵ emphasizes creative writing, finding your voice


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — As a guest speaker for the fifth annual Barrio Writers program at Stephen F. Austin State University, Casey Muze, musician and founder of Starr Avenue Company, uses his hands to create a calming beat on his drum to help participants understand the power of creative expression.

Nacogdoches Photographic Association to open annual summer show


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Nacogdoches Photographic Association will open its 2019 gallery show with a reception at 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Navigating the college experience can be challenging. But two Stephen F. Austin State University faculty members have made it their mission to help incoming college students plot their educational experience with their recent book, “Thinking with Excellence: Navigating the College Journey and Beyond.”

ĢƵ Rusche College of Business students study in Germany, Austria and Italy


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — They say the world is a classroom, and for 44 Stephen F. Austin State University students in the Rusche College of Business destinations in Germany, Austria and Italy recently replaced their regular class schedules.

Trading the pineywoods for the sights and sounds of Munich, Germany; Innsbruck, Austria; and Verona and Rome, Italy; students enrolled in a marketing course focused on industry, education and sports experienced business internationally.

ĢƵ Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature Louisiana horticulture consultant


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s ĢƵ Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. June 13 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.
 
Dr. Allen Owings, senior horticulturist at Bracy’s Nursery in Amite, Louisiana, will present “Crimes Against Horticulture: Common Improper Practices.”
 

ĢƵ Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosts math festival


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Students from area schools recently participated in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival, hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and spent the day working with faculty and ĢƵ students to develop problem-solving skills through math puzzles, problems and games.
 

Texas National exhibition showing through Blueberry Festival weekend


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Time is running out on opportunities to view this year’s Texas National exhibition at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

Jennifer Garza-Cuen, an artist from Reno, Nevada, was selected as having the winning entry in the 2019 Texas National Competition and Exhibition at Stephen F. Austin State University. An ĢƵ art graduate student was also among the top honorees.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Determination and the Lumberjack spirit seem to run in the family for Heather Dulin, a 2009 Stephen F. Austin State University graduate whose great-grandmother, Ibby Inez Fuller, attended ĢƵ during the university’s infancy.
 

Violin, viola beginner class added to Music Prep summer lineup


The Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music has added a beginner violin and viola class to its summer program offerings.

Taught by Alba Madrid, the class is for students ages 9 through 14 who will learn the basics of playing violin or viola, reading music and making fun with musical friends, according to Pat Barnett, Music Prep director.

The class is from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays June 4 through 27 and is limited to 10 students. Tuition is $100, and instruments may be rented.

ĢƵ student to compete in College National Finals Rodeo


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Kasen McCall, a freshman agribusiness major, will represent Stephen F. Austin State University in the team roping event at the 2019 College National Finals Rodeo June 9 through 15, in Casper, Wyoming.
