‘The Miracle Worker’ calls attention to relationship that ‘changed the world’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Most people are familiar with the story of blind and deaf Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan.

William Gibson’s play “The Miracle Worker” provides an intimate look at the student and instructor before they became historical figures and advocates for people with disabilities. It also reminds audiences of the miraculous achievements Keller and Sullivan made in changing the world of the disabled at a time when little had been discovered in the field of deaf-blind education.

ĢƵ students gain industry insights through New York City tour


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University students in the fashion and interior merchandising and interior design programs went behind the scenes of industry sites in New York City during a Maymester study-abroad experience.

Students in HMS 426: Field Experience in Human Sciences toured many iconic locations such as the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Battery Park, as well as stores in the Big Apple. Leisha Bridwell, associate professor in ĢƵ’s School of Human Sciences, organized the trip.

ĢƵ signs exchange agreement with Business and Hotel Management School in Switzerland


Stephen F. Austin State University students studying at the Business and Hotel Management School in Switzerland will have the opportunity to take a variety of classes from culinary labs and specific areas of hotel operations and management to leadership classes geared toward the service industry. B.H.M.S. offers highly ranked hospitality management and culinary arts programming.

ĢƵ's fashion merchandising program hosts Conserving the Classics: A Lecture with Melanie Sanford


Textile conservator Melanie Sanford of Textile Preservation Services of Texas showcases a skirt from 1875 during Conserving the Classics: A Lecture with Melanie Sanford held at Stephen F. Austin State University. The skirt is part of ĢƵ's collection of approximately 800 pieces of fashion items. The university is working to raise funds to update facilities to help preserve these artifacts.

ĢƵ College of Education to host third Barrio Writers summer program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's James I. Perkins College of Education will host Barrio Writers, a free weeklong summer writing program, June 5 through 9 on the ĢƵ campus.

This is the third year ĢƵ is offering the program, which is tailored for students ages 13 through 21 with an interest in reading and writing. This year's program is the largest with 40 participants from Nacogdoches, Lufkin, Central and Central Heights.

Dr. Heather Olson Beal, ĢƵ associate professor of secondary education, is coordinating the program.

During their study abroad experience, Stephen F. Austin State University students attended a presentation by Dr. Forrest Yang, a marketing professor at the City University of Hong Kong, who highlighted the importance of building relationships to conduct business as well as the tax-free port and low-tax structure, which made Hong Kong a key business location for multiple companies.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's ĢƵ Gardens will host three Pineywoods Camps this summer for children ages 4 to 15. The camps offer outdoor adventure, exploration and recreation in the scenic forests in and around Nacogdoches.

ĢƵ wins Southland Conference RecycleMania tournament


RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs in the U.S. and Canada to promote waste reduction activities on their campuses. Stephen F. Austin State University recently won first place in the Southland Conference RecycleMania tournament, for the second consecutive year.
