Nakasone exhibition features the art of 'sho'


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The exhibition "Ron Y. Nakasone: Formless Form, the Art of Sho" will open with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in Griffith Gallery on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The exhibition features the modern expression of a traditional art form that is still highly respected in East Asia. The art of "sho" and its metaphysical support, Buddhist thought, especially that of Zen, had a great impact on Western art in the later half of the last century, according to John Handley, director of Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ art galleries.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Wind Ensemble to present "Legends" program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Wind Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present "Legends" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in W.M. Turner Auditorium in the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ campus.

"We have three featured performers on this concert," said Fred J. Allen, director of bands.

Staci Spring, bassoon instructor in the School of Music, will perform as soloist on Dana Wilson's "The Avatar," a concerto for bassoon and chamber ensemble.

"This music has an Indian flavor to it," Allen said.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will present a graphic design conference Thursday and Friday. Oct. 15 and 16, featuring visiting Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ alumni who work professionally in the design arts.

The conference is intended for interested Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ students studying art, communication, marketing and related fields, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ faculty and staff, as well as regional and junior college instructors, high school art students and teachers, and design professionals in all areas of marketing, advertising and public relations.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Gardens Lecture Series to feature Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ soil scientist


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. in Nacogdoches.

Dr. Leon Young, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ professor of agriculture and director of the soil, plant and water analysis laboratory in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, will present "Can We Feed Nine Billion in 2040 and How?"

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ theatre students bring study-abroad experience to 'Arabian Nights'


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Theatre majors at Stephen F. Austin State University bring a wealth of talent to every Mainstage production.

From acting and stage managing, to lighting, sound, costume and scenic design, Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ theatre students quickly become well versed in the dynamics of producing a successful play.

The School of Theatre takes pride in providing the kind of curriculum and hands-on experience that gives each student a diverse skill-set. The school also cultivates internships and international programs to enhance what the students learn at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ faculty member arrested


A Stephen F. Austin State University faculty member was arrested on campus this morning on a charge of possession of child pornography.

An investigation began when images were discovered on a server used by the business college. Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ's Department of Public Safety worked with other law enforcement agencies to determine the origin and nature of the content and found that images of child pornography had been downloaded and disseminated from an Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ computer. There is no evidence that the illegal images involved Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ students in any way.

Counselor Summit to connect counselors, educators, administrators in region


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University is connecting counselors, teachers and administrators by hosting the Counselor Summit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, in the Education Annex, Room 127, on Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ's campus.

Clarinetist Lignitz-Hahn to perform at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Dr. Kellie Lignitz-Hahn, assistant professor of clarinet at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, will perform a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

Joining Hahn will be colleague Sehee Lee, lecturer of piano and collaborative piano at Texas A & M University-Kingsville. Among the featured works will be Malcom Arnold's Sonatina and Grammy-winning composer Libby Larsen's "Licorice Stick."

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ's jazz bands to perform program of classic swing music


NACOGDOCHES, Texas -The Swingin' Axes and Swingin's Aces jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform classic swing music at their next concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in Cole Concert Hall on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ campus.

The performance will feature the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Henry Mancini and other great jazz composers.

Directed by Dr. Gary Wurtz, professor of trumpet and jazz studies at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ, the Swingin' Axes' program will include Ellington's classic "Take the A-Train" and Buddy Rich's "Basically Blues."
