ĢƵ Men's, Women's choirs to perform music from around the world


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Men's Choir and Women's Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will present a concert featuring a variety of performers, including high school choirs from Nacogdoches and Lufkin, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

"Songs My Mother Taught Me" is a collection of folk songs, game songs and hymns from around the world, according to Dr. Tod Fish, associate director of choral activities at ĢƵ and conductor of the choirs.

President of Braille and Cane Club, ĢƵ Adaptive Sports Club named student leader of the year


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — When one door closes, another often opens. This is true for Stephen F. Austin State University senior Catherine Lard, who discovered her true calling after changing her major from nursing to orientation and mobility.

A Baytown native, Lard has been a member and now president of the Braille and Cane Club and ĢƵ Adaptive Sports Club. Members in both organizations utilize various events and outreach projects to advocate for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

ĢƵ Phi Beta Lambda members among top award winners at state conference


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Several Stephen F. Austin State University students from the Rusche College of Business were among the top award winners during the recent Phi Beta Lambda Texas State Leadership Conference.

During the conference, students compete in events that test their business knowledge and skills. These competitive events include objective tests and/or performance-based activities on a variety of topics, such as computer and entrepreneurship concepts, forensic accounting, strategic and statistical analysis, sales, website design, and more.

ĢƵ Music Prep offering summer lessons, camps


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Registration is underway for summer lessons and camps offered by the Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music.

Lessons are offered in piano, jazz piano, voice, guitar, flute, Suzuki violin and other instruments. Private lessons begin the week of June 3.

ĢƵ bands to present annual Concert in the Park


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the annual Concert in the Park Sunday, May 5, in the wooded area along Vista Drive and in front of the Wright Music Building on the ĢƵ campus. The concert begins at 2 p.m. and is free to the public.

ĢƵ children’s series to present ‘The Jungle Book’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Children's Performing Arts Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will present two performances of "The Jungle Book" on Thursday, May 16, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the ĢƵ campus.

Virginia Repertory Theatre’s production of “The Jungle Book” is based on the classic tales by Rudyard Kipling. The book and lyrics are by Scott Wichmann, and music is by Julie Fulcher-Davis. Kipling wrote The Jungle Books collection of stories more than 100 years ago, but his classic tales are still being reproduced on the stage and in the cinema.

ĢƵ Wind Symphony to present 'Solitary Dances' program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Wind Symphony at Stephen F. Austin State University will present a concert that recognizes dances from around the world when the student ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the ĢƵ campus.

"Solitary Dances" will feature works by Warren Benson, John Barnes Chance, Percy Grainger, Alfred Reed, Henry Fillmore and other composers, according to Dr. Tamey Anglley, associate director of bands at ĢƵ and director of the Wind Symphony.

ĢƵ's Charter School to celebrate 10 years


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Charter School will celebrate its 10-year anniversary at 3 p.m. May 22 with a meet-and-greet outside the Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center on Raguet Street.

Named the No. 1 charter elementary school in Texas by Niche in 2018, the ĢƵ Charter School has set a standard of excellence for its students and educators throughout the decade.

The institution serves both the public and university by existing as a free public school and learning environment for ĢƵ students studying elementary education.

ĢƵ’s Orchestra of the Pines to present ‘Musical Landscapes’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Orchestra of the Pines at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Musical Landscapes” when the student ensemble performs at 7:30 pm. Tuesday, May 7, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

Among the highlights of the concert will be a performance of Fort Worth music composition student Travis Wattigney’s “The Awakening Valley.” The work was the winning entry in the 2018 Tennessee Valley Music Festival for Scores and was selected as winner in the most recent ĢƵ School of Music’s Composition Competition, earning it a performance by the orchestra.

Program features ‘An Evening of Great American Song’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the program “I Won’t Dance: An Evening of Great American Song” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, in the Music Recital Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

“I Won’t Dance: An Evening of Great American Song” is a program of all early 20th century popular music and will feature songs from George and Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and others.
