Exhibition celebrates ĢƵ printmaking collaborations


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and Art Galleries will host “Image & Text Collaborations: A 20-year Celebration of ĢƵ Book Arts” April 13 through June 8 in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
 
The exhibition was organized to recognize the history of the former Lanana Creek Press, which for 20 years served as a center for collaborative projects between artists, writers and designers and achieved regional and national attention, according to Dr. David Lewis, professor of art history at ĢƵ and curator of the exhibition.

ĢƵ hosts inventor of popular fictional languages


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of English and Creative Writing will host David J. Peterson, inventor of languages for television and movies, at 6:30 p.m. April 22 in Dugas Liberal Arts North, Room 142.

Peterson’s talk, “The Art of Language Invention,” will discuss his process for creating languages. Peterson has invented numerous languages, most notably Dothraki and High Valyrian for HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”

ĢƵ to present multimedia, musical performance based on character studies


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present “Canetti-menagerie: a surreal soirée,” a program of works by Joseph Klein, at 6 p.m. Monday, April 22, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

ĢƵ students create organization for bilingual education


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Imagine being in a classroom where you don’t speak the language. You try to complete your assignments. You try to communicate with your classmates, but you can’t.

“There are a lot of kids coming into Texas who don’t speak English and Spanish learners who are having trouble in the classroom. I was one when I was younger, and I didn’t have the guidance I needed,” said Miriam Lira, a student at Stephen F. Austin State University who has recently been involved with helping create a chapter of the Bilingual Education Student Organization.  

ĢƵ Sylvans win Southern Forestry Conclave and set records


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University timbersports team, the Sylvans, claimed its third consecutive victory at the 62nd annual Association of Southern Forestry Clubs Conclave hosted last week by Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

“This was the most talented and dedicated team I’ve seen since becoming the faculty advisor in 2012,” said Dr. Jeremy Stovall, associate professor of forestry.

ĢƵ Wind Ensemble to present ‘Faces & Places’ concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Wind Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Faces & Places” when the student group performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the ĢƵ campus.

The concert will feature Dr. Jacob Walburn, assistant professor of trumpet at ĢƵ, as soloist on American composer John Mackey’s iconic trumpet concerto “Antique Violences.” ĢƵ Director of Bands Dr. David Campo directs the Wind Ensemble.

Mr. and Miss ĢƵ Announced


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Jacob Spies of Douglass and Kristine Cross of Houston have been selected as the 2019 Mr. and Miss ĢƵ. The two Stephen F. Austin State University students will be honored during halftime of the ĢƵ men’s basketball game against Sam Houston State University March 9 at 4:30 p.m.

The Mr. ĢƵ title was established in honor of the late Stan McKewen, a 1934 ĢƵ graduate. The Miss ĢƵ title was established in honor of Arnodean Covin, who was named Miss ĢƵ in 1940, 1941 and 1942.

ArtsPower brings ‘Madeline and the Bad Hat’ to ĢƵ stage


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Children's Performing Arts Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will present two performances of the enchanting "Madeline and the Bad Hat" on Wednesday, March 6, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the ĢƵ campus.

The third in Ludwig Bemelman’s “Madeline” series, "Madeline and the Bad Hat" is presented by ArtsPower National Touring Theatre. The story focuses on the unbreakable bonds of friendship and family, according to Diane Peterson, ĢƵ Fine Arts Box Office manager and director of the children's series.

Buyse-Webster Duo to present flute, clarinet recital


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music and the Friends of Music Concert Series will present the Buyse-Webster Duo performing in a flute and clarinet recital at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 2, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

ĢƵ to screen ‘Koo-Hoot Kiwat: The Caddo Grass House’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Koo-Hoot Kiwat: The Caddo Grass House” at 7 p.m. Friday, March 1, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

In the PBS film, which is directed by Curtis Craven, a Caddo tribal elder and his apprentice return to their ancestral homeland in East Texas to direct the construction of a traditional grass house.
