Victims of Alto tornado invited to participate in group therapy session at ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Jose Carbajal, Stephen F. Austin State University assistant professor of social work, invites victims of the recent tornado in Alto to participate in a group therapy session designed to help them process and heal from this traumatic event.
 
The processing session will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, May 17, on the ĢƵ campus in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room. Carbajal is an approved consultant in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing treatment and is an EMDR certified therapist.
 

ĢƵ's Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders offers guidance for Better Hearing and Speech Month


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - In recognition of Better Hearing and Speech Month, Stephen F. Austin State University's Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders is offering guidance on how to recognize communication disorders and ways to treat them.

"Development of strong communication skills is extremely important," said Deena Petersen, center director. "Yet common misconceptions remain. One misconception is children generally outgrow speech or language difficulties. Unfortunately, this often delays treatment."

Purple Paperclip project to benefit The Helping House


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - It all started with a simple purple paperclip. Now, it has evolved into a charitable silent auction.

This semester, Stephen F. Austin State University students involved in an honors project in the Rusche College of Business have enhanced their business communication skills in a unique way.

Based on a childhood barter game and the One Red Paperclip project by Kyle MacDonald, ĢƵ students traded a purple paperclip for items of increasing value.

ĢƵ's A Cappella Choir to present 'Odyssey'


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The A Cappella Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will present its final program of the semester, "Odyssey," at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

"Odyssey" features choral music that chronicles intellectual, spiritual and physical wandering of the heart and mind, according to Dr. Michael Murphy, director of choral activities at ĢƵ and the choir's conductor. Joining the choir will be Dr. Ron Petti, director of collaborative piano at ĢƵ, and Jacob Rivas, graduate conductor.

ĢƵ librarian finds new ways to engage students


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A librarian at Stephen F. Austin State University is using visual clue cards, cell phones and scavenger hunts to help students familiarize themselves with Steen Library.

Working with ĢƵ 101 classes, Melissa Clark uses this interactive activity to ensure that students are aware of the various resources available in the library.

“It’s about highlighting those different things and where they are located and getting students comfortable navigating the library on their own,” Clark said.

ĢƵ to present Tennessee Williams’ ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” comes to W.M. Turner Auditorium April 30 through May 4 as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre’s Mainstage Series. Directed by ĢƵ’s Playwright-in-Residence Jack Heifner, the play is about a southern family in crisis.

Set in the plantation home in the Mississippi Delta of Big Daddy Pollitt, a wealthy cotton tycoon, the play examines the relationships among members of Big Daddy's family, primarily between his son Brick and “Maggie the Cat,” Brick's wife.

ĢƵ to screen ‘Alive and Kicking’ dance film


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Alive and Kicking” at 7 p.m. Friday, May 3, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The Villalobos Brothers: Contemporary Mexican music coming to ĢƵ


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Acclaimed as one of today’s leading contemporary Mexican groups, the Villalobos Brothers will bring their high-octane musical fiesta to Nacogdoches when they perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

ĢƵ Sound Recording Technology’s Rockin’ Axes to perform


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Rockin’ Axes at Stephen F. Austin State University will present a concert featuring popular songs from different time periods when the student ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the ĢƵ campus.

A student group within the School of Music’s Sound Recording Technology program, the Rockin’ Axes is directed by Nick Lambson, SRT faculty member.

ĢƵ to hold dedication ceremony for obstacle course


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University will hold a dedication ceremony for the 1st Lt. Kile G. West Memorial Obstacle Course at 2:30 p.m. April 29 at the Student Recreation Center on the ĢƵ campus. The public is invited to attend.
